D9D9 Scatter symbol Explained — Why Position Does Not Matter

Scatter symbol is a term every casino page leans on and nearly none of them explain.

Scatter symbol — A symbol that pays or starts a feature wherever on the reels it appears.

What Scatter symbol actually means

Scatters, unlike ordinary symbols, do not have to sit on a payline. A set number of them landing anywhere on the grid typically starts a feature round, usually free spins, and in some cases also pays straight away. Each game sets its own required number, which the paytable states instead of it following a convention.

Using it in practice

The paytable states how many scatters are required and what they award, and this varies between games that look the same. A quick look at it takes no money and avoids the commonest way of misreading a spin result. The quickest way to fix it is against what free spins means, which appear beside it in most rulebooks.

Wherever a term such as Scatter symbol turns up on a game page here, a figure the studio never released is flagged as missing, never filled in from a comparison site’s table. Which is the cause of the gaps you will notice in a number of the spec tables here.

The common misreading

Many players think scatters become ‘due’ once a dry run has gone on. They do not. Spins are independent of one another, so a long stretch since the last trigger has no effect on the chance of the next. That is the gambler’s fallacy applied to one symbol, and it drives players to chase a feature that sits no nearer than it did an hour earlier.

A scatter is not a wild, and it stands in for no other symbol. On the vast majority of games, two scatters and a wild do not trigger anything. Nor does it always pay as a symbol; on many titles scatters set off the feature and award nothing directly.

A worked example

Suppose a game triggers free spins on three scatters at a fixed per-spin probability: after 200 spins with no trigger, spin 201 has exactly the probability that spin one had. The machine does not remember the drought and has no way of doing so.
